A Variable Frequency Oscillator (VFO) requires a circuit that can maintain a steady frequency over time without drifting. The Colpitts oscillator is widely chosen for VFO designs because of its excellent frequency stability. It achieves this stability through its capacitive voltage divider feedback network. Capacitors are generally less prone to temperature-induced value changes compared to the tapped inductors used in other designs, such as the Hartley oscillator. This makes the Colpitts far less susceptible to thermal drift. While high output power and linearity are important in some transmitter stages, the absolute primary requirement for a VFO is that it stays exactly on the frequency you tune it to. Power is usually handled by subsequent amplifier stages, making stability the deciding factor for the oscillator itself.
