Receiver desensitization, or "desense," occurs when a very strong off-channel signal enters the receiver and overloads the RF amplifier or mixer stages. This overload reduces the receiver's gain, making it difficult or impossible to hear weak desired signals.
To reduce this effect, you must prevent the strong off-channel signal from reaching the receiver's front end. A cavity filter is a very high-Q (highly selective) tuned circuit that passes only the desired frequencies while sharply attenuating nearby unwanted signals.
The other options do not solve RF overload. Increasing the receiver bandwidth would actually allow more unwanted energy into the circuit. Adjusting the audio gain or squelch only affects the output stages after the overload has already occurred in the front end.
