Transistors are sensitive semiconductor devices that can easily be permanently damaged by excessive heat. When too much current flows through the device, it dissipates power as heat; if this heat cannot escape fast enough, the internal semiconductor junctions will melt or break down. While saturation and cut-off are normal operating states for a transistor acting as a switch, they do not inherently cause damage unless the maximum current or voltage ratings are exceeded, which would subsequently cause overheating. Excessive light is relevant only to specific optoelectronic devices and isn't a general cause of failure. To prevent thermal failure, circuits are designed to limit current, and heat sinks are often attached to power transistors to safely dissipate the excess heat.
