Open-wire transmission line (often called ladder line or window line) uses mostly air as its dielectric, which results in exceptionally low inherent RF loss compared to coaxial cables. Because its baseline loss is so low, it can handle the high Standing Wave Ratios (SWR) created by using a non-resonant antenna on multiple bands without turning that reflected energy into excessive heat. Conversely, coaxial cable suffers from much higher losses under high SWR conditions. However, open-wire line does have practical drawbacks: its electromagnetic fields extend outward, meaning it must be kept away from metal objects to prevent detuning and loss, which makes the distractor about locating it near metal completely incorrect.
