The 20-metre band (14 MHz) is known as the premier HF band for daytime DX (long-distance) communications. Because of its specific frequency, the ionosphere's F layer is almost always sufficiently ionized by daytime solar radiation to refract 20-metre signals back to Earth, regardless of the overall 11-year solar cycle.
While higher frequency bands like 10 or 15 metres require the peak of the solar cycle to open for reliable long-distance skywave propagation, 20 metres remains open even during solar minimums. Therefore, it successfully supports worldwide propagation at any point in the solar cycle during daylight hours.
