What is the required transmit frequency of a CW signal for channelized 60 meter operation?
B
Answer
Extra class rules and station restrictions
Type
A
At the lowest frequency of the channel
B
At the center frequency of the channel
C
At the highest frequency of the channel
D
On any frequency where the signal’s sidebands are within the channel
Answer Notes
The 60-meter band is unique in the US because it is allocated on a channelized basis rather than a contiguous block of spectrum. For most voice and data modes, operators must ensure their signal remains entirely within the 2.8 kHz channel bandwidth limits.
However, for CW (and data modes with a bandwidth of less than 2.8 kHz), the FCC specifically requires operators to transmit exactly on the center frequency of the channel. Distractors suggesting you can transmit anywhere as long as you stay within the channel are incorrect, as the FCC mandates centering narrow signals to prevent accidental drift outside the strict channel boundaries.
