When identifying Field Effect Transistors (FETs) on a schematic, the direction of the arrow on the gate terminal is the key to determining the channel type. For a Junction FET (JFET), the arrow is drawn on the gate lead where it meets the straight line representing the channel.
In a P-channel JFET, this gate arrow points outward, away from the channel. You can remember this by associating 'P' with 'Pointing out'.
Conversely, an N-channel JFET has the gate arrow pointing inward, toward the channel ('N' for 'iN'). Other symbols in such figures typically represent N-channel devices or MOSFETs, which have a distinct gap between the gate and the channel to represent insulation.
