For what portion of the signal cycle does each active element in a push-pull, Class AB amplifier conduct?

A
Answer
Practical circuits and system design
Type
A
More than 180 degrees but less than 360 degrees
B
Exactly 180 degrees
C
The entire cycle
D
Less than 180 degrees

Answer Notes

Amplifier classes are defined by their conduction angle, which is the portion of the 360-degree AC cycle during which the active device conducts current. A Class A amplifier conducts for the entire 360 degrees, while a pure Class B amplifier conducts for exactly 180 degrees (one half-cycle). Class AB sits midway between Class A and Class B. To minimize crossover distortion in a push-pull configuration, a small resting bias is applied so each device conducts for slightly more than 180 degrees, but less than the full 360 degrees.
