What is one way that RF energy can affect human body tissue?
A
Answer
Electrical and RF safety
Type
A
It heats body tissue
B
It causes radiation poisoning
C
It causes the blood count to reach a dangerously low level
D
It cools body tissue
Answer Notes
RF (radio frequency) energy is a form of non-ionizing radiation. Unlike the ionizing radiation from X-rays or nuclear materials, RF energy does not have enough energy to strip electrons from atoms or directly damage DNA, which is what causes radiation poisoning.
Instead, the primary health hazard of exposure to high-level RF fields is dielectric heating. Much like a microwave oven heats food by agitating water molecules, strong RF energy can be absorbed by the human body and converted into heat, potentially damaging sensitive tissues like the eyes or internal organs that have limited blood flow to cool them.
