What is the purpose of a capacitance hat on a mobile antenna?
C
Answer
Amateur station equipment
Type
A
To increase the power handling capacity of a whip antenna
B
To reduce radiation resistance
C
To electrically lengthen a physically short antenna
D
To lower the radiation angle
Answer Notes
Mobile HF antennas are typically much shorter than a natural quarter-wavelength due to physical height restrictions on vehicles. This physical shortness makes the antenna highly capacitive and requires the use of inductive loading coils to achieve resonance, which can reduce overall efficiency.
By adding a 'capacitance hat'—usually a spoked wheel or metal disk at or near the top of the whip—you add capacitance to the end of the antenna. This effectively makes the antenna appear electrically longer to the radio waves than it is physically.
Because the antenna is electrically lengthened by the hat, you can use a smaller inductive loading coil to achieve resonance. This increases the antenna's radiation resistance and operating bandwidth, leading to a much more efficient radiating system.
