To accurately measure current, all of the electricity flowing to a component must pass directly through the measuring instrument. Therefore, a multimeter configured to measure current (acting as an ammeter) must be connected in series with the component, breaking the circuit and inserting the meter into the path.
Ammeters are built with extremely low internal resistance so they do not restrict the circuit's normal flow. If you mistakenly connect a current meter in parallel across a power source or component, this low resistance will create a short circuit, potentially blowing the meter's internal fuse or damaging the device.
