What is meant by the statement that a satellite is operating in U/V mode?
B
Answer
Signals, emissions, and modulation
Type
A
The satellite uplink is in the 15 meter band and the downlink is in the 10 meter band
B
The satellite uplink is in the 70 centimeter band and the downlink is in the 2 meter band
C
The satellite operates using ultraviolet frequencies
D
The satellite frequencies are usually variable
Answer Notes
Amateur radio satellites often receive signals on one band and retransmit them on another. This is known as cross-band operation. To easily describe these band combinations, operators use a standard letter designation format: Uplink / Downlink.
In 'U/V mode', the 'U' stands for UHF (Ultra High Frequency), which corresponds to the 70-centimeter amateur band. The 'V' stands for VHF (Very High Frequency), which corresponds to the 2-meter band. Therefore, you transmit to the satellite (uplink) on 70 centimeters and listen to it (downlink) on 2 meters.
Distractors like 'ultraviolet' or 'usually variable' are simply playing on the letters U and V, but have no meaning in standard amateur satellite radio operations.
