Answer Notes

A grid locator, formally known as the Maidenhead Locator System, is a standard method used by amateur radio operators to concisely describe their geographic coordinates. It uses a string of alternating letters and numbers (such as FN20) to pinpoint a location anywhere on Earth. Grid locators are especially popular in VHF/UHF contesting and digital modes (like FT8), where transmitting full latitude and longitude would take too long. It has nothing to do with the 'grid' inside a vacuum tube amplifier or an instrument used for direction finding.
