Answer Notes
In Canada, a standard Basic qualification (passing with a score of 70% to 79%) only grants access to amateur frequencies above 30 MHz, which covers VHF, UHF, and microwave bands. To access the High Frequency (HF) bands below 30 MHz, an operator must achieve "Basic with Honours" by scoring 80% or higher on the Basic exam.
Alternatively, if an operator already has a standard Basic certificate, they can upgrade to gain HF access by subsequently passing either the Advanced examination or the 5 words-per-minute Morse code test. This tiered system ensures that operators using global-reaching HF bands have demonstrated a higher level of proficiency.
