A ferrite core inductor, often called a ferrite choke, is frequently used to block unwanted high-frequency radio frequency (RF) interference. Because an inductor's reactance (opposition to AC) increases as frequency increases, it naturally fights against high-frequency signals. By winding a coil on a ferrite core, the inductance increases, which in turn creates a very high reactance at radio frequencies. This effectively 'chokes' off the offending RF signal while allowing lower-frequency audio or DC currents to pass easily.
