D
A DX spotting system using a network of software defined radios
Answer Notes
VARA is a high-performance software modem and digital protocol that has become highly popular for use with the Winlink Global Radio Email system. It uses advanced modulation techniques to achieve much faster data transfer rates over HF and FM VHF/UHF bands than traditional packet radio or older soundcard modes.
Because VARA is implemented entirely in software, it only requires a standard radio interface and a computer soundcard. This eliminates the need for an expensive hardware Terminal Node Controller (TNC) like those historically required for protocols like Pactor.
The distractors describe other amateur radio technologies that are easy to confuse. For example, low signal-to-noise EME modes refer to WSJT-X protocols like JT65, and DX spotting networks refer to systems like the Reverse Beacon Network.
