RIT stands for Receiver Incremental Tuning, also commonly referred to as a Clarifier. When operating on Single Sideband (SSB), if a replying station is slightly off your frequency, their voice will sound unnatural in pitch (too high or too low, often described as a 'Donald Duck' voice). Adjusting the RIT changes only your receive frequency by a small amount so their voice sounds normal, without altering your transmit frequency. This ensures you and the other station don't end up chasing each other up and down the band.
