In the standard Technician exam schematic diagram (Figure T-1), component 1 is drawn as a jagged, zigzag line. This is the universally recognized electronic schematic symbol for a fixed resistor. A resistor's job is to restrict or limit the flow of electrical current in a circuit. The zigzag 'bumpy road' visual is an excellent way to remember its function, as it visually represents resistance to the current path. Distractors like a battery or a connector have entirely different standard symbols. A battery is represented by parallel lines of alternating lengths, while a connector looks like interacting physical plugs and jacks.
