What does the term “traffic” refer to in net operation?

In amateur radio, particularly during net operations, the term "traffic" specifically refers to formal messages that are formatted, relayed, and delivered on behalf of others. This is a structured way of moving information, commonly using the ARRL National Traffic System (NTS) radiogram format. It does not refer to the volume of stations checking in, nor does it refer to how often a net is activated. It also has nothing to do with mobile or portable stations operating while driving in vehicular traffic, which is a common misconception for beginners.
