Answer Notes

The FCC currently issues only three classes of new amateur radio licenses: Technician, General, and Amateur Extra. This simplified three-tier structure was established after a major restructuring of the licensing system designed to streamline the progression path for new operators. Older license classes, such as Novice, Advanced, and Technician Plus, are considered legacy classes. While existing licenses in these categories can still be renewed indefinitely, the FCC no longer grants them to new applicants. If a legacy license holder wishes to upgrade, they must test into the current three-tier system.
